Hot Girls Fill Cavities
Kelsey is a dental student graduating in May 2023 with a focus in general dentistry. She orients around helping marginalized communities improve their oral health. Kelsey also enjoys seeing live music, buying vintage clothes, and spending time with her morkie pup, Jasper!
Q: What is your day-to-day like? What are some current projects you are passionate about?
A: “In my fourth year of school I am seeing patients all day every day in our school’s clinic with oversight from attending doctors. Due to the nature of seeing patients and providing the care they need, every day looks different. For example, an emergency patient may come in needing a root canal. The other day I did border molding to make complete dentures. It can be very time consuming to get an accurate impression of the mouth.
I volunteer with Mission Lex; a free clinic where I try to see as many patients as possible. Between meeting graduation requirements in clinic and volunteer hours, my days can go from 8 am to 10 pm. I do like how every day looks different.”
Q: How are you breaking glass ceilings/ and helping pave the way for more women in your industry?
A: “I notice the older generation of patients prefer to see male doctors, but I would say women dentists are preferred with the younger generation—since women have smaller hands and are stereotyped as more detail oriented.
My 2023 class at the University of Kentucky has more female students than male—the first time in school history. Because of our tendency to build connections with patients, people are more open to having a woman dentist than ever before.
I would say every girl in my class has experienced a pretty extreme instance of sexual harassment from a patient. I myself had to report a patient once and switch with a male student. The University tries to handle these situations, but it’s a pervasive problem.
Q: What does being a "hot girl" mean to you?
A: “A lot of girls in my class—myself included— struggle with imposter syndrome and feelings of inadequacy. I try to walk into clinic with confidence that I deserve to be here, I work hard for this, I am trained to do this. God has equipped me to do this. To me, being a ‘hot girl’ means having confidence in your intellectual ability.”
