Hot Girls Empower
Originally from Connecticut, Liz has resided on O’ahu, Hawai’i for five years. This passionate educator seeks to empower young students to think creatively and discover their identity through learning. Through a lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis, Liz helps create visibility around disabled persons in the workplace.
What is your day-to-day life like? What are some current projects you are passionate about?
“My day-to-day involves teaching, supporting, and being relentlessly roasted by 100+ middle schoolers. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to create my own curriculum, in which I center diverse stories, student voices, and leadership opportunities. Right now, I'm most excited about a developing project that combines the stories of refugees of war and climate, innovative climate solutions, and design thinking!”
How are you breaking glass ceilings/ and helping pave the way for more women in your industry?
“While women are strongly represented in the field of education, the field itself (like many largely female fields) is often undervalued and undercompensated. As a lead faculty representative for the Hawaii State Teachers Association, Curriculum Lead, and Rural School Leadership Academy fellow, I strive to represent teacher voices and develop solutions that benefit educators and students. My most valuable work, though, is in the classroom, where I can model and teach about what is possible across lines of gender.”
What does being a "hot girl" mean to you?
“Being a ‘hot girl’ means making the choice to fiercely love yourself and the world around you. You can laugh at yourself and face down challenges, because you have an unshakeable belief in yourself. Finally, in my case, it means hyperhidrosis.”
